This thermometer is an ENERGY METER for your stove. Placed at about eye level on your flue pipe, it gives important control information for wood and multi-fuel stove owners.
This thermometer measures the surface temperature of your flue pipe. On dark flue pipe readings are accurate to + or - 5% of the full scale. For stainless steel or galvanised flue pipe add 15% to the readings due to the lower emissivity of light coloured surface.† Creosote build up inside the pipe has little effect on surface temperature readings.† The surface temperature is normally 40 to 50% less than the flue gas temperature at the centre of the pipe.
Flue pipe surface temperatures over 800∞F, such as during a chimney fire, decrease magnetic strength and the thermometer could fall and burn the floor. To prevent this, drill a hole in your flue pipe, place a screw through the eyelet in the centre of the thermometer and screw in. If you wish to move the thermometer later, you can plug the remaining hole with the screw or, if you prefer, the thermometer can be wired onto the pipe using holes in the sides.
Although all stainless steel stove pipes may be safely drilled to accept a safety screw, certain manufacturers of vitreous enamelled pipe may regard their guarantee as negated. If in doubt, consult your Stovax dealer or use safety wire instead of the screw.
